This recent recording features the Sunwrae Ensemble, with a composition entitled Autumn Never Fall by composer and performer Rae Howell. Since its genesis in 2001, the Sunwrae Ensemble has dazzled audiences across Australia with its signature blend of stylistically diverse and visually stimulating chamber performance.
Consisting of a regular and interchangeable line-up of some of Australia’s most esteemed musicians, Sunwrae’s repertoire of solo works to large ensemble arrangements boasts an edgy and diverse mix of the classical, jazz and world music influenced instrumental music composed by Sunwrae founder, performer and Artistic Director Rae Howell.
Under the direction of freelance composer and multi-instrumentalist Rae Howell, Sunwrae’s music has been described as painting ‘… every style, every influence, in complete, organic harmony’ [The Silent Ballet 2009]. The ensemble features a diverse range of instruments in interchangeable arrangements, including piano, vibraphone, string quartet, harp, clarinets, alto flute, lap-steel guitar, double bass, drum-set and percussion. Since their inception in 2001, Sunwrae have realised in excess of 170 performances, touring across 7 Australian States, premiering nearly 50 original works by Rae Howell.
The Sunwrae Ensemble has recorded albums Never Stops to Wait (2005), and Autumn Never Fall (2009), and has featured on CDs and DVDs from the Eavesdropping Concert and Art Exhibition Series (2003-2007) - an annual concert and exhibition series of music performances by the Sunwrae Ensemble with exhibitions of visual art by various highly acclaimed Australian artists. Live at The Thornbury Theatre (2009) is their most recent live album recording. Australian festival appearances for Sunwrae have included the Brisbane Festival, Camden Haven Music Festival, Apollo Bay Festival, Bright Spring Festival and Golden Plains Festival, and the ensemble has also performed internationally at South by South West (Austin Texas USA) and at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House in Vietnam.
