A Quick Q & A with Benaud Trio's Lachlan Bramble
What have the Benaud Trio been up to since being inducted as the 3MBS Musicians-in-Residence?
Our main project for the year has been presenting our own concert series in Melbourne. This is a daunting task for any ensemble and 3MBS has been great in helping us promote the concerts. We have also played many concerts outside of Melbourne in Castlemaine, Shepparton, Flinders and Adelaide.
How does a chamber trio function when one member is living in Adelaide?
Organising rehearsals and concerts requires a bit more planning than it otherwise would. Although this makes things tricky at times, it has also given us numerous opportunities in South Australia. We have given two concerts in Adelaide in the last 18 months and are returning next year to play in the Ngeringa Farm Concert Series. We have also been able to work with esteemed cellist Janis Laurs and take workshops at the Elder Conservatorium.
How will the start of the cricket season impact on your rehearsal and performance schedule?
Every rehearsal and concert has been cancelled whilst we tune in to Richie!!!
What concerts can Benaud Trio fans look forward to?
We are currently putting the nuts and bolts together for our second concert series next year - we will have details very soon! We also have a new website on the way which is very exciting.
What is the best concert you have seen this year?
The Kungsbacka Piano Trio was a definite highlight. We are also looking forward to the Brentano String Quartet's tour of Australia in November. We were lucky enough to work with the Quartet's leader, Mark Steinberg when we were in Banff. He is an awesome performer and great mentor.

1st Innings: Monday March 10, 7.30pm
Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No.2 in C minor Op.66
Paul Stanhope: Piano Trio "Dolcissimo Uscignolo" (2007)
Shostakovich: Piano Trio No.2 in E minor Op.67
Mendelssohn’s neglected second Piano Trio is at least as good as his more popular first. Be whisked away by the airborne delicacy and ardent romanticism of one of music’s true greats.
Paul Stanhope’s first work for Piano Trio is a literally a ‘song without words’. Based on Monteverdi’s heartbreakingly beautiful madrigal "Dolcissimo Uscignolo", it reflects on the beauty of a nightingale’s song, its joy and freedom in flight.
There are very few pieces of chamber music with the emotional impact of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio. Completed after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the work construes the tragic fate of the Jewish nation. As is so often the case, Shostakovich’s music is ‘laughter through tears’.
2nd Innings: Monday September 1, 7.30pm
Haydn: Piano Trio in C major Hob.27
Ives: Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano
Dvorak: Piano Trio No.3 in F minor Op.65
Haydn’s music is aristocratic, witty and full of life. His sparkling C major Piano Trio is no exception, showcasing Haydn’s astonishingly inventive keyboard writing.
Charles Ives’ only Piano Trio is a reflection of college life at Yale University. A hundred years before Facebook, Ives quotes more than twenty college songs in a hilarious quodlibet.
Dvorak’s epic F minor Trio fuses Brahmsian romanticism with Slavic folk idioms to tremendous effect. Although at times tragic, the music is boldly defiant to its ecstatic conclusion.
