3MBS Composer Award 2008 - Bigger Than Ever

Since the year 2000, 3MBS has been supporting Australian composers in one of the best ways possible; financially. This year, the 3MBS National Composer Awards reaches new heights.

For 2008 the Betty Amsden Award has been increased to $10,000.

The unique award has been developed by 3MBS in association with Orchestra Victoria, Betty Amsden OAM, APRA, the Arts Centre and the Robert Salzer Foundation to promote and nurture Australian composers and showcase their orchestral works.

The $10,000 Betty Amsden Award is offered for the winning entry, and an additional amount will be awarded to a second composer for the APRA Encouragement Award.

This competition is open to Australian residents of all ages and the judges are looking for scores not previously performed in public.

Entries are now being accepted for the 2008 Award, and 3MBS is anticipating that the response will be bigger than ever. As a dedicated supporter of emerging artists, 3MBS is delighted to offer our talented composers the opportunity to have their music performed by a skilled and professional orchestra in a grand concert venue to an appreciative audience.

Have your music heard! The winning composition will be performed at a spectacular concert presentation by Orchestra Victoria on the 24th July 2008 at Hamer Hall (Melbourne, Victoria) conducted by the internationally renowned Marko Letonja. The performance will then be broadcast on the national MBS radio network.

Closing date for entries in the 2008 3MBS National Composer Awards is
Friday 9th May 2008 at 5pm.

3MBS Announces Lin Bender as new General Manager

The Chairman of 3MBS Classically Melbourne, Professor Peter Sheldrake, recently announced the appointment of Lin Bender as General Manager of 3MBS, succeeding 3MBS’s outgoing long-serving chief David Melzer

3MBS is Melbourne’s highly regarded classical music radio station which in addition to broadcasting, provides music resources, education, concerts and events, ticketing and promotion to the community.  Alongside day-to-day operations, Lin Bender will be responsible for the development of capital funds to enable the station to enhance its broadcast facilities and music presentations.  Taking 3MBS further into the digital age, she will also increase its profile and help strengthen the national MBS network.

Commenting on her appointment, Peter Sheldrake said, “In losing one outstanding General Manager, we are gaining another.  Having established ourselves under David Melzer’s guidance in our new premises in Abbotsford, 3MBS is now ready to embark on the next stage of development.  Lin Bender is the ideal person to lead that development as we seek to grow our engagement with the classical music community, which embraces performers, audiences, and our loyal subscribers.  3MBS is a key player in Melbourne’s musical life, and Lin has the background, the networks and the passion to help us enhance and develop that role even further in the future.  Indeed, as the very nature of broadcasting is under scrutiny in the emerging digital era, we know that Lin will enjoy the satisfaction of making yet another major contribution to music and musicians in Melbourne and internationally.”

Lin Bender is well-known in the international music community, most recently through her role in creating Melbourne Recital Centre.  She was engaged by Arts Victoria in 2003 to develop the original Recital Hall Brief, guiding the design process and navigating the project as it progressed to being an independent entity.  Her current role as Corporate Development consultant commenced in May 2007.

“Lin has been integral in bringing Melbourne Recital Centre to fruition,” said Melbourne Recital Centre Chairman Jim Cousins.  “While we are sorry to see her leave, everyone knows that Lin loves a challenge, and we know that our challenge at Melbourne Recital Centre has almost reached finality in terms of building the venue and creating the operating company, so it is understandable that she should seek a new role that offers the kind of challenge she loves.  It’s been a long and hard project and it wouldn’t have happened without her.  We wish her all the very best and we look forward to seeing her on the other side of the table when we are working out the broadcasting arrangements for Melbourne Recital Centre,” said Mr Cousins.

Lin Bender has worked extensively in the arts as a consultant in project management, production, marketing and business development.  Prior to Melbourne Recital Centre, she was National Marketing Manager, Australia Business Arts Foundation and General Manager, Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.  She also established Musica Viva In Schools in Victoria and co-founded Church Street Photographic Centre

“It has been a privilege working for the past four-and-a-half years on Melbourne's long-awaited recital hall,” said Lin Bender.  “As the countdown to opening begins, I leave confident in the knowledge that Melbourne Recital Centre's two magnificent venues will join the ranks of the world's great concert halls.  I am thrilled to be handed the baton as the new General Manager of 3MBS Classically Melbourne.  It's a perfect segue from staged performance to free-to-air radio.  This is a dream job, bringing great music, free for all Melburnians, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  It is an unlimited platform for music-making,” said Ms Bender.

Lin Bender will leave Melbourne Recital Centre on February 29 and take up her new role at 3MBS Classically Melbourne on March 17.
