Melbourne in Concert presented by Allan Smith, 7pm Sunday 11 May
March of the Women was created in 2020 to celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month and was established by flautist Eliza Shephard to celebrate female composers from around the world and their “flute+” repertoire.
After five years March of the Women now represents a significant, curated collection of works by female composers worldwide, demonstrating the various ways that the flute can be used in music, and the strength and creativity that women bring to the world of music.
On Sunday 11 May, we present the third of five monthly March of the Women live-to-air performances. 3MBS and March of the Women curator and artistic director, Eliza Shephard, are collaborating to present different ensembles and works each month, and tonight Eliza is joined by Phoebe Green (viola) and Melina van Leeuwen (harp).
Phoebe, Melina & Eliza first collaborated in 2024 for a sold-out performance at the Kew Court House featuring an imaginative selection of repertoire for flute, harp, and viola. These three artists seek to expand repertoire for their instruments and are prolific commissioners, generating new bodies of work and celebrating unfamiliar pieces from across history.
Phoebe Green
Melbourne-based Australian violist Phoebe Green is active in her artistic practice as a performer, improviser, researcher, curator, and advocate. In a vocation where the close dialogue with composers is intrinsic to a meaningful performance outcome, Phoebe has commissioned numerous works for viola and other instruments.
Melina van Leeuwen
Melina van Leeuwen performs nationally as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. She has performed extensively in chamber music ensembles around Australia. Melina has appeared as Principal Harp with leading Australian chamber and symphony orchestras. Melina is passionate about collaborating with composers to expand the harp repertoire.
Eliza Shephard
ABC Young Performer of the Year Eliza Shephard is a vibrant flautist and is paving her way as a performing artist, collaborator, and curator.
Eliza is passionate about amplifying the voices of female musicians and composers, and her annual ‘March of the Women’ recording project was instigated in 2020. Eliza is a Teaching Associate and Sessional Academic at Monash University and a recipient of the Ian Potter Emerging Performers Fellowship. She is proud to be a Haynes Artist.
