La Serenissima Venezia Spettacolare

During the Renaissance period, Venice and its unique maritime setting were reflected in splendid art, architecture, and music, represented here by masterpieces by Giovanni Gabrieli (c.1553/57-1612) and Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643). Both composers served as director of music at the Basilica of San Marco—the private chapel of the Doge, the elected ruler of Venice—but also a cathedral for the entire republic.
