The Talent Episode 6: oboist Issac Wong and pianist Jacob Wang

For our sixth episode we’re delighted to welcome oboist Isaac Wong and pianist Jacob Wang. They will perform programmes featuring the music of Saint-Saëns, Strauss, Britten, Ravel, and Ginastera before receiving on-air feedback from mentors Coady Green and Jasper Ly. Isaac Wong

Oboist

Isaac Wong is 13 years old and is currently in year 8 at McKinnon Secondary College. He started playing the oboe at 9 years old when he was still in Hong Kong. He studied under a teacher called Mr. Ho. Two and a half years’ later and after a move to Australia, Isaac started learning with Andrew Jacobs until Andrew’s unfortunate and untimely death.  Currently studying between Emmanuel Cassimatis and Martin Lee, Isaac completed his Grade 8 comprehensive oboe exam last year, passing with honours.

Isaac recently had the chance to perform Air from Bach’s Easter Oratoria with McKinnon’s Chamber Strings ensemble.  He currently plays in the Australian Youth Band and will be auditioning for Melbourne Youth Orchestra next year.  He is also working towards his Certificate of Performance.

Isaac will perform:

  • Saint Saens: Oboe Sonata 2nd movement
  • Richard Strauss: Oboe Concerto in D Major
  • Benjamin Britten: Six Metamorphosis for solo oboe 1st Movement – Pan

Jacob Wang

Pianist

Jacob Wang is 13 years old and commenced his piano journey at the age of 6. He passed AMusA in 2023 and is now preparing for LMusA on piano. His piano teacher is Alison Kirkpatrick.

Jacob has achieved prizes and awards in eisteddfodau, including 1st prize at Ringwood Eisteddfod, finalist in the under 16 years and under at Boroondara Eisteddfod, as well as finalist at the PolMusicA music competition in Melbourne. 

At Trinity Grammar, Jacob performs in choral concerts and big bands.

Jacob is particularly drawn to 20th century music, such as french impressionists and the percussive rhythms of South American composers such as Ginastera. 

Jacob plays sports and loves playing soccer. He enjoys reading books of a Dystopian Genre and coding computer games.

Music is an important part in his life, especially when performing, allowing him to convey his interpretations and expression to the listener.

  • Ginastera: Criolla from Tres Piezas Op.6
