David Menzies, Former Volunteer
Classical music has been such a big part of my life and 3MBS was so much a part of that interest as well. I was originally persuaded to join 3MBS by Bruce Johnstone who was a much-loved presenter at 3MBS for many years and who I knew when I was involved in the MSO subscribers’ group.
When I joined, technically, 3MBS was much different from what it is today. We used to use turntables with pickups, and you used to watch the records go round hoping that it would not jump a track or do something weird.
In those days we were not as adventurous as we are now. There were recordings made outside the studio, but they were rarely played. Often, they were on reel-to-reel tape which you could not edit.
I created several traditions at the station. One of them was playing a complete recording of the Messiah at Christmas and John Cleghorn has continued that tradition now. I used to play the Messiah recording on Christmas night, and I always tried to have a different recording each year.
People at 3MBS have such a deep love of music and are extremely knowledgeable about music. It is not just a paid announcer gig.
If you are keen on music, then you are keen on 3MBS.
