Dr Alastair Jackson AM, Patron & Former Volunteer

In the 1980s one of the committees I was a member of was approached to put together a small group to present a program on opera and singers. This evolved into an hour of music and interviews, including segments on historic singers of the past which proved very popular. My active involvement lasted twenty years but the program is still going in the same timeslot to this day.

From my early days at the station, one of the things that has stood out was the great enthusiasm and love of music among the volunteers. It was infectious and really kept me coming back.

The move to Abbotsford has created great modern studios, a performing venue and a dedicated administrative area, as well, which was an improvement. I must admit though I was all for staying in Kew and renovating the premises. We owned the building there, thanks to the Board I was on, and I believe security of tenure was very important.

Some of my favourite experiences as a presenter were interviewing operatic performers and those involved in the international opera world. One especially fascinating guest that comes to mind was the late Earl of Harewood, a cousin of  Queen Elizabeth II. He started probably the most influential opera publication in the world, Opera magazine, back in 1950 and he had an encyclopaedic knowledge of opera and singers. Especially interesting were his recollections of Maria Callas who he knew very well. He had followed her career since seeing her perform in La Gioconda at the Arena de Verona back in 1947.

One of the things I like most about 3MBS is giving listeners enjoyment. I also really enjoy getting audience feedback. Interestingly the phones would ring almost incessantly when I presented the nostalgia programs featuring semi-classical recordings and artists from the past.

The station fulfils many important functions. I hope that younger people can be, through the station, exposed to good music. I worry that we are not educating children with a proper appreciation of classical music.
