Peter Wakeley, Volunteer
I have a passion for sharing music and have been doing this in various ways including some years at a country radio station with a very broad musical coverage. In 2023, I retired after 40 years of presenting the organ and choral music program which began in 1983. Simon Colvin has also been involved since 1985 and later we were joined by John Worcester. When the program moved from Sunday evenings to Sunday mornings in 1998, I recognised a need at this time of day to provide a wide-ranging showcase of sacred and secular organ and choral music for both the general music lover and the connoisseur.
Some years ago, a CD carousel was used for the overnight Notturno program. One Sunday morning while driving to 3MBS I noticed the carousel had developed a fault. During a performance of Handel’s Messiah, it was repeating ‘King of Kings and Lord of Lords’—maybe that was appropriate for a Sunday morning—this continued until I arrived at about 6.30pm and was able to rescue the situation. Among my pleasant memories is the atmosphere on some days in the 3MBS library, a sort of club for music lovers, with camaraderie, all working together to share beautiful music.
