Whether to study piano or cello? Whether to have a career in commerce or music? These are the questions Li-Wei Qin considered early in life. Fortunately, he chose the cello, and he’s now a much sought-after international cellist and teacher.
Li-Wei was born in Shanghai and moved to Melbourne with his family when he was 13. At 17, he won the ABC Young Performer of the Year Award, then spent 10 years in the UK. In 1998 he was awarded the Silver Medal at the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition. He now lives in Singapore, teaches at Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing conservatories, and performs around the world.
