Dr John Griffiths AM

Dr John Griffiths AM in conversation with Kiera Stevens

John Griffiths AM has devoted his life to the study and performance of the Spanish vihuela and the lute, specialising in Renaissance music. John grew up playing the guitar and studied music at Monash University. Postgraduate study took him to Europe, where he also played the lute and the Spanish vihuela.

Thus began a life-long passion for playing and researching early music. In 1978 he was a founding member of the well-loved group La Romanesca. In 1980 John joined the Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne, where he became the founding director of the Early Music Studio. In 2019 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to music education. He continues to perform, teach, research and contributes to many publications. He shares his passion for music and musicology with Kiera Stevens this week on Reflections.
